Eatonville’s most famous resident is the renowned author Zora Neale Hurston, who grew up in the town. Hurston’s experiences in Eatonville heavily influenced her writing, and she is best known for her novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God.” Today, the Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts stands as a tribute to her life and work, showcasing her art, writings, and personal belongings.
The town has a vibrant arts and cultural scene, with the annual Zora! Festival serving as a celebration of the town’s heritage and Hurston’s legacy. The festival features music, food, and arts and crafts, drawing visitors from all over the country.
Eatonville has a small population of around 2,000 residents, and its historic downtown area is home to several historic buildings, including the Town Hall and the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. The town’s Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, recognizing its importance as a significant African-American community in the South.

The town continues to thrive as a tight-knit community, preserving its unique heritage and maintaining a sense of pride in its rich history.
